As members of a profession with a certain amount of job security, morticians skillfully blend science, art and social work. From first encounters with a corpse to perusing casket catalogues, a wide range of those who handle life’s final arrangements talk openly about their vocations with candour, compassion and a healthy dose of humour. As one funeral director keenly observes: “Death is a fact of life. When you’re born, it's the only guarantee. They say ‘death and taxes.’ But some avoid paying taxes.” Balancing the solemn nature of the subject with much-needed levity, an embalmer discusses the details of their trade while we see a hearse getting its fluids changed. Taking us behind the scenes of the routines and rituals that follow our final breath, Undertaker for Life! Explores touching reflections on grief, mourning and the big spiritual questions of what happens to our souls when we die with an unexpected, but welcome, joie de vivre.
