Overwhelming solitude, the experience of emptiness, and a sense of suspension between life and death. It sounds like a description of November in Poland or the shortest definition of Thomas Bernhard's work. And indeed, the dark world of Der Atem emerges from inspiration from the text of the rebellious Austrian. However, Florentyna Cieślak's animation remains a fully autonomous record of a daydreamt nightmare, in which the sense of powerlessness and lack of influence over one's own life is both terrifying and disturbingly fascinating.
