From an ordinary person, through a pop icon, to a humanitarian: Annie Lennox was born in the 1950s into a Scottish working-class family, catapulted onto the world stage in the 1980s, while primarily operating as a human rights activist today. Lucie Cariès’ documentary follows her revolutionary and transgressive career, with successes both on the charts and in challenging established societal norms. Besides defining Annie Lennox as a discursive concept and a public figure, the film simultaneously provides intimate insights into the emotional world of the androgynous singer, illustrating the shift in her focus – from music to activism – and bringing the viewer closer to the woman who “to face the world’s chaos to calm the chaos within.”
