Thestorybeginsstartswiththebirthofababygirl,RajaNandini,intheworldoffeudallandlords-Zamindars-whosewordislawforthevillagerswhoworkontheirland.Nandini'sthreebrothersthrowafeastinhonorofthegirlchild.Theyoungsonofthelocalsinger(whohaddied)isbroughtintosingfortheevent.ThethreebrothersraiseNandiniliketheirownchildastheirparentshaddied.Attheageof5,anastrologerpredictsthatNandiniwillbringmuchhappinesstothefamily,buthermarriagewillbasedonherchoiceandnotthechoiceofherbrothers.Thisangersthebrothersandtopreventthisfromhappening,sheisraisedwithintheconfinesofthehouse.Sheishomeschooledandwhenshedoesgoout,allthemenarewarnedtohidefromNandiniandthatseeingNandiniwillbemetwithdireconsequences.RajaNandini(KarismaKapoor)reachespuberty.Thefewmalesallowedaroundheraretheservicestaffandherbodyguards.Meanwhile,theboywhosang,Rama(Venkatesh)growsuptobeanaiveandgulliblesimpletonwithaheartofgold.HeisraisedbyhiswidowedmotherSavitri(RaakheeGulzar).Hedoesn'tgotoschoolandspendshistimesingingandentertainingthepeopleofthevillage.OnedaythebodyguardsgetintoafightwithRamawhobeatsthemup.ImpressedwithRama'snaivetyandfightingskills,thebrothershireRamatobeNandini'sbodyguardandbutler.Nandinimeanwhilestartstoresentherlackoffreedom.SheengagesRamatoshowherthevillagewithoutherbrothersknowledge.RamacomplieswithherwishesandshowsherthevillagewhichresultsinNandinigettingsick.RamaisblamedforNandinigettingsickandgetsbeatenupbythebrothers.NandiniwhohasjuststartedtolikeRamafeelsguiltyforbeingthereasonforhimgettingtrashed.Thisincidentbringsthemclosertogetheremotionally.NandinirealizessheisnowinlovewithRama.Oneday,afactoryworkerispunishedforleeringatNandini.HeplotstokillNandiniattheinaugurationofthenewfactoryownedbyherbrothers.Ramaoverhearstheplot,andinadesperateattempttosaveNandinilungesonherandinadvertentlyfeelsherupinpublic.NandinidoestmindanddefendsRamabyarguingthatRamawouldn'tdosomethinglikethatinpublic.Butherbrothersareenraged.Theybeathimtothepointthattheyalmostkillhim.Nandinistopsthemandgiveshimachancetoexplain.WhenRamaexplainsthesituationtheyhangtheirheadsinshame.Ramaquitshisjobonthespot,despiteNandini'ssilentapology.ThatnightNandinidecidestomeetRamaandapologizeandperhapsconvincehimtocomebacktothejob.Ramarefusestocomebackashedoesn'twanttoputupwiththeviolentnatureofherbrothers.ShethinksifRamamarriesher,theywon'tbeabletomanhandleRama.SheconvincesRamatotieaweddingchain(Mangalsutra)aroundherneckwhichwillprotecthimfromherbrothers.Ramawithoutrealizingthesanctityoftheactdoesastoldanddoesn'trealizeheisnowmarriedtoher.RamacomesbacktoworkandisgivenahigherlevelofrespectbythebrothersforsavingNandinislife.Nandinitoostartsemulatinghersisters-in-lawintakingcareofherhusband.ThismakesRamanervousbuthestillremainsclueless,herchangeinbehaviorisnoticedbyhersister-in-lawwhourgethebrotherstogetNandinimarriedoffbeforethesituationgetsanyworse.NandinirealizingthattheyaretryingtogethermarriedofftriestomakeRamaunderstandthattheyarealreadymarried.Ramarefusestounderstandandrunsawaytohismotherwhouponrealizingwhathashappenedpullshimoutofdenial.Shesendshimawayinanattempttoprotecthim.Thebrotherscometoknowwhatshappenedandtrytotorturethemothertogethertorevealwherehersonishiding.Sheissavedintimebyhersonwhoalmostkillsthebrothers.Thewivesofthebrothersstophimfromkillingthem.
