剧情梗概：
本剧讲述清末两个县令见时局混乱，从山西退安回到北平，家庭中各色人物，以不同的角色参与到社会生活中去，即有思想陈旧，但始终坚持民族气节的范爷、施爷；有过继到范府当少爷的光汉，终日不思进取，逛青楼、抽大烟、最终沦为封建家庭的殉葬品。有信仰三民主义的光文；有不计后果一心只想成为人上人的范府丫环玲子，有为封建包办婚姻自杀的范府媳妇尔新；有为争取女性自由独立而付出生命代价的太太月娘；更有为献身革命事业的念人和光武。本剧的中心人物郭彩三是一个具有浓郁传统观念的人物，全剧通过郭彩三的视角贯穿整个范府大院的兴衰。他从范府一个小听差的，凭借个人能力成为范府大管家。在日本侵略者占领北平时被日本人逼迫做了税务局长，但在地下党“蔡老板”引领下，为共产党八路军做过很多有益的事，表现了一个中国人应有的民族气节。但在国民党统治时期，被定为北平头号大汉奸。北平解放后，共产党给郭彩三平了反。而他与年轻的范家太太月娘、丫环玲子、范家大小姐念人、二小姐念春之间的感情纠葛，更是让全剧充满了灵与肉的搏杀，故事跌宕起伏、悬念丛生……最终每个人为了自己的理想而各奔东西。本剧通过郭彩三这个特殊人物，把两大家庭和半个世纪的近代史串了起来。郭彩三是中国封建社会的代表，在对待范府上下，既表现了传统文化中的忠孝、节义情结，又展示出他生活在这两大封建家庭中的人格特征，同时也反证了一个主题，这样一个封建的人文环境，只能锻造出郭彩三这样的人物。而念人这种大胆接受进步思想、在理想、道德和科学知识方面都全面领先的人物，必然是最终的收获者和胜利者。
