剧情梗概：
越王勾践跟吴王夫差对战，夫差为报仇雪恨，养精蓄锐，誓取越国。越国大夫范蠡劝告勾践切莫跟夫差火并，不为接受。勾践跟夫差对垒，夫差节节胜利，勾践及其五千残兵被围困会稽。越王走投无路，悔恨不已。范蠡力主勾践向夫差去国归降，让文种留守越国，鼓励女织男耕，暗把军旅重练，而自己则跟随勾践至吴国屈侍夫差。越王君臣数人到达吴都参见夫差，当即进献美女宝物，并低声下气地极力奉承献媚；再经伯噽一旁帮腔，勉强取得夫差的谅解。夫差派人在阖卢墓侧筑一石室，把勾践夫妇、君臣驱入室中，脱去所穿衣冠换上罪臣衣裙，使其蓬头垢脸地从事养马等贱役。每当夫差乘车出游，勾践都要手执马鞭徒步跟在马车左右。路过通行闹市时，吴人指着说：“那个就是打了败仗的越王，快来看呀！”讥讽嘲弄之声不绝于耳。勾践十分痛苦、绝望；但于范蠡眼中，一个看似混乱和绝望的地方，在在充满着生机和希望！他一直侍奉勾践，甘于跟他受凌辱，只在等待一个翻身的机会。三年的岁月，范蠡陪着勾践夫妻共吞下不少屈辱；多少次，勾践欲放弃，却都被范蠡阻止！范蠡的无限智能、情深义重，成为勾践的生存力量！所有人都知道勾践甘愿屈于吴国，是想恃机复仇。伍子胥多次要求夫差灭越；然而，狂傲自信的夫差却刻意要保着勾践；他认为把勾践留在身边，肆意玩弄，比一刀杀死更为痛快！范蠡跟夫差早在会稽之役前曾多番交手，互有输赢。夫差跟范蠡惺惺相惜，皆视对方为终极对手──一段亦敌亦友的关系由此展开。夫差对勾践日渐软化，主要是出自对范蠡的欣赏，他多番萌释放二人回国之念，但都为伍子胥所反对。转折点，就在勾践待在吴国的第三年；一次夫差染病，范蠡知道是寻常疾病，不久即愈，便与勾践商定一个计策：他居然让勾践去尝粪卜疾，取悦于夫差！果然，夫差被勾践感动，立即让勾践夫妻搬出石室，迁居附近民房，仍然养马。不久，夫差病愈，正如范蠡所料那样，吴王决定释放勾践回国。并命人于文台置办酒席，隆重地欢送勾践还越。伍子胥大怒，对夫差说：“勾践尝大王粪便，是吃大王之心。”夫差不听，如期释放勾践回国。勾践没有忘记那三年的屈辱，回国后卧薪尝胆，誓要振兴越国；受过教训，勾践对范蠡言听计从。范蠡主张要礼待弱小国家，对于强国，表面上应该采取归顺的态度，但骨子里不能屈服。至于吴国，要促使他走向衰落，等到时机成熟，便可以一举灭之。彷如宿命，夫差跟范蠡于感情上亦纠缠不清。夫差在花溪偶遇一位国色天香的美丽少女西施，后来方知她居然是范蠡的未婚妻。夫差不顾一切追求，西施不为所动。却在勾践和范蠡于吴国当奴隶后，西施竟然投至夫差怀抱。夫差并非善类，一直猜疑西施之阴谋。但终不敌西施的美貌和柔情，对西施宠爱有加。此举正中西施下怀，因为西施正是范蠡一手培训出来对付夫差的“最精良武器”。智能过人的范蠡更是机关算尽，着西施跟夫差大玩心理战术。西施以美貌以柔情攻陷夫差，吴国看似强大的国势，实在已埋下衰败的伏线。范蠡和夫差互相计算对方，但人为变量，往往出人意表！范蠡跟西施虽然甘愿牺牲儿女私情，但妒忌乃是人之常情，看着心爱的人投向敌人怀抱，范蠡饱受煎熬。西施又何尝快乐？越是被夫差宠爱，她越是痛苦！却又必须强装快乐！其痛苦不足为外人道！范蠡化悲愤为力量，不住向勾践献出良策以对付夫差。他们誓要令越国强盛起来，再伺机一举灭吴。西施跟范蠡里应外合，她以夫差宠妃身份，不住离间伍子胥和夫差。伍子胥忿忿不平，跟夫差关系日渐紧张。吴国早因夫差嚣张而招至其它诸候的敌对，危机四伏。伍子胥反对夫差攻齐，主张应要灭越而跟夫差反目；夫差赐伍子胥一把宝剑，命他自杀。死前一刻，伍子胥要求把双目挖出：“大王不听劝阻，我要亲自看着──过不了三年，吴国必然会被越国攻破！”伍子胥一语成忏，一切都在范蠡的预计中！最后，范蠡以妙计断绝吴国的粮食；然后，在吴国饱尝内忧外患之际，出兵攻吴，施予致命重击！最后，夫差自尽，吴国被越国所灭。越国变得前所未有的强盛。这二十二年，越国上下，特别是越王勾践、范蠡和西施过着的是非人的忍辱负重的生活！最后，他们成功了！夫差跟范蠡经历二十多年的双雄斗，最终胜利者是范蠡！范蠡把西施接回越国，跟西施成亲，对她感激及宠爱有加。范蠡被勾践封为上将军，恩荣无比，功成名就。夫差离世后，范蠡彷佛亦感意兴阑珊。荣华一刻，范蠡不辞而别，带领家属徒隶，驾扁舟，泛东海，浪迹天涯，隐于江湖。
