剧情梗概：
方世玉（张卫健饰）出生在清朝末年的广东，自小就顽皮机敏，而且在母亲苗翠花的调教下，更是练得一身好武功。世玉好胜顽劣，经常在外闯祸，搞得全城满目疮痍，经常得由苗翠花帮助解围。父亲方德虽然知道苗翠花母子两虽然经常闯祸，但其实为人行侠仗义，也就责罚一下了事。一日，世玉与新来的洪熙官（樊少皇饰）因误会大打出手。方德觉得自己真的没有能力管教好世玉，于是送儿子前往杭州投考雷老虎办的通天书院读书，因为这个书院与朝廷关系密切，日后容易走上仕途。岂料考试期间，世玉顽性不改，与女扮男装前来考试的严咏春（李婷宜饰）成了斗气冤家，更当众揭穿了她的身份。随后，世玉遭到了咏春的情人、雷老虎的侄儿雷人王的报复，被取消考试资格。世玉为了父亲，再次投考通天书院，岂料方德竟被雷老虎取笑他家境不入流，不让世玉入学。世玉于是怒砸了通天书院的牌匾，震怒了雷老虎。其后世玉入读其爹兴办的琼花书院，与冤家洪熙官成了同窗。正当世玉在琼花书院安心读书时，同窗胡惠乾（郑国霖饰）因为父亲病重急需用钱，无奈之下收受了雷人王的好处，将恶作剧嫁祸给世玉。惠乾之后良心发现，供出了雷人王才是幕后黑手。于是，世玉和雷家的恩怨纠葛由此展开了。
