剧情梗概：
1949年秋天，人民解放军挺进东南，占领福建。国民党军上尉参谋罗进及其家人随败兵车队撤往沿海，途中车队遭受伏击，罗进与妻子刘小凤和出生不久的女儿于战场失散。伏击车队的解放军连长杜荣林下令把战场上拾到的女婴送附近农家收养。后来，他收养了这个女婴。杜荣林一直坚守于海防前线。剿匪期间，他负重伤，与医生秦秀珍产生感情并结婚，那个年代特殊的生活经历使杜荣林和养女杜山感情深厚。后来，杜荣林重返海防部队，杜山考上大学，杜家重现生机。其间杜荣林一直搜寻罗进，想搞清楚其与自己家庭的种种缘由，但是一再失之交臂。改革开放时期，随着两岸关系的发展，罗进父子以台商身份到大陆投资，罗进最终了却心愿认女。杜荣林经受认女冲击和家庭变故，却襟怀宽大入情入理。部队整编后，杜荣林解甲归田离休，住进干休所，他关注海峡，至死不渝。
