剧情梗概：
从小跟从父亲学习剑道的矢田部，在一次训练过程中致父亲重伤不治，从此意志消沉，沉迷酒色。极具天赋的高中生羽田机缘巧合跟随僧侣剑道大师光邑习武，并受其所托将一封信转交给矢田部。矢田部借机大闹剑道部，包括羽田在内的学员集体溃败。矢田部无法面对已变成植物人的父亲，整日沉溺在童年阴影和错杀父亲的愧疚中。一个雷雨交加的夜里，羽田在矢田部的必经之路上向他发起挑战，并坦言自己曾经因为溺水而留下心理阴影，希望能和内心同样痛苦的前辈一较高下，矢田部恍惚中重伤羽田。矢田部的父亲病逝，葬礼上矢田部仪态尽失，在光邑大师的安抚下，读了父亲写给大师的一封信，其中声明自己在丧妻之后一蹶不振，和儿子之间已生罅隙，自己一心求死，想命丧儿子剑下，但希望光邑培养儿子成材。重整旗鼓的矢田部终于将要迎来和羽田一场正式的比赛。影片改编自芥川赏作家藤泽周同名小说。


Yatabe, who learned kendo from his father since he was a child, suffered serious injuries to his father and died during a training session. Since then, he has been depressed and addicted to alcohol and sex. The extremely talented high school student Haneda happened to practice martial arts with the monk kendo master Guangyi, and was entrusted by him to deliver a letter to Yatabe. Yatabe took the opportunity to make a fuss in the Kendo department, and the students including Haneda were collectively defeated. Yatabe couldn't face his father who had turned into a vegetative state, and was immersed in the shadow of childhood and the guilt of wrongly killing his father all day long. On a thunderstorm night, Haneda challenged Yatabe on the only way he must pass, and confessed that he had left a psychological shadow due to drowning, hoping to compete with his predecessor who was also suffering in his heart. Yatabe seriously injured Haneda in a trance. Yatabe's father died of illness, and at the funeral, Yatabe's demeanor was lost. Under the comfort of Master Guangyi, he read a letter written by his father to the master, which stated that he was devastated after losing his wife, and there was a gap between him and his son. Begging to die, wanting to kill his son under the sword, but hoping that Guangyi will train his son to become a useful person. The revived Yatabe will finally usher in a formal match with Haneda. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Akutagawa Sho writer Fujisawa Shu.
