'Mission Eternal Ice' tells the thrilling journey of the Sedna IV, from Montreal to Vancouver through the legendary Northwest Passage, an expedition through the fragile Antarctica. Stunning Nature was the first victim of global warming.
For about 50 years, scientists draw on signs of global warming. The increase in temperature leads to climate changes and affects the balance of the oceans , which are an essential part of climate events . The location away from human agglomerations Antarctica plays an important role in the regulation of temperatures on Earth. What is the future of the region and such a rare species living there ? A team of scientists has traveled aboard the research vessel " Sedna IV" on a year long expedition to the Southern Ocean.

Seit rund 50 Jahren zeichnen Wissenschaftler Anzeichen der globalen Erderwärmung auf. Der Temperaturanstieg führt zu Klimaveränderungen und wirkt sich auf das Gleichgewicht der Weltmeere aus, die wesentlicher Bestandteil des Klimageschehens sind. Auch die abseits menschlicher Ballungsräume gelegene Antarktis spielt eine wichtige Rolle für die Regulierung der Temperaturen auf der Erde. Welche Zukunft ist der Region und den dort lebenden seltenen Arten beschieden? Ein Wissenschaftlerteam hat sich mit dem Forschungsschiff "Sedna IV" auf eine einjährige Expedition ins südliche Eismeer begeben.
Ein Jahr lang kreuzt das Forschungsschiff in diesen gefährlichsten Meeren der Erde. Die Wissenschaftler suchen Beobachtungsstationen auf, an denen die beunruhigenden Symptome des Klimawandels aufgezeichnet werden. Hier in der Antarktis äußert er sich so drastisch wie nirgends sonst. Unweit der Südspitze Lateinamerikas ankert die "Sedna IV" vor den Inseln Südgeorgiens. Dort beobachten die Forscher Krillschwärme , See-Elefanten, Königspinguine und Seerobben. Noch vor nicht allzu langer Zeit war die Region ein Paradies für Krillfresser. Doch mittlerweile ist dieses wichtige Glied der Nahrungskette rar geworden. Diese Tatsache wirkt sich verheerend auf die Tierpopulationen aus. Wissenschaftler vermuteten schon lange, dass das Schwinden dieser Nahrungsressource eine der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf die Ökosysteme der Meere ist.
Eine Gruppe von Forschern startet eine Expedition in das südliche Eismeer, um die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zu erforschen. Mit dem Forschungsschiff "Sedna IV" docken sie dabei gezielt Beobachtungsstationen an.
