Information
Roots Rock Reggae subtitled 'Inside the Jamaican Music Scene' is part of a series of music documentaries (Beats of the Heart) by noted English Filmmaker Jeremy Marre that examines from a street-level perspective a different music scenes from around the world. Industrial-age ethnomusicology with travelogue, Jeremy Marre's 12 one-hour Beats of the Heart documentaries of the late '70s and early '80s were cheered by world-pop fans when PBS broadcasted them in 1986. This was an amazing enterprise--ranging from China and Japan to Appalachia and the Tex-Mex border, Marre did pioneering research into what was then mostly pure esoterica.
Kingston, Jamaica, 1977: a flashpoint year for reggae music and for its tiny homeland. Police and thieves battle in the street as politicians fight for power – and reggae musicians struggle for people's souls. This was the first in-depth documentary about reggae music in Jamaica, and the social and political importance of this 'cry of the people.'
Roots Rock Reggae shows us Jamaican society from the violent struggles of the Trenchtown ghetto to the placid hills behind Kingston, where Rastafarians drum and sing hymns, and everything in between: the sound systems, back-street studios – including Lee 'Scratch' Perry's famous Arc – political bandwagons and radio stations. This film captures a moment in time in Jamaica's history when music became the island's voice. It immortalises the heroes that went on to become superstars.
Features great footage of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee Perry at Black Ark studio, Jimmy Cliff with Sly and Robbie, Inner Circle playing on the Streets of Kingston, the Abyssinians, Joe Higgs, Toots and the Maytals, U Roy, the Mighty Diamonds, Third World, and great archive footage of the streets and ghettos. Also features Haile Selassie's royal visit to Jamaica while police and thieves battle it out on the streets, and the ghettos erupt in violence.
1977: An extraordinary year for Reggae music, captured live in this award-winning film.
