　　本片描述主人翁在青年时代进入西点军校当体育教官，前后服务了五十年，成为不少军校学生的良师益友。全片从一个小人物的日常生活来反映被誉为美军精神堡垒的西点军校在二十世纪前半期的整个历史演变，亲切自然。蒂龙．鲍尔将马提马哈的性格作出有血有肉的诠释，莫林．奥哈拉演他的妻子也很称职。其中有不少片段拍得十分感人，是约翰福特导演佳作之一。台湾曾模仿本片拍过《黄埔军魂》。
