Information
Last Chance to See
Join Britain's best-loved wit and raconteur, Stephen Fry, as he follows in the footsteps of his great friend, the late writer Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), along with zoologist Mark Carwardine, to remote parts in search of some of the rarest and most threatened animals on Earth.
Twenty years ago Carwardine teamed up with Adams and embarked on a groundbreaking expedition in search of some of the world's most endangered animals. This time, he is joined by Stephen Fry to see how all those animals have been faring in the years since and which, if any, survived.
In this programme we follow the duo on six separate journeys which take them from the steamy jungles of the Amazon to the ice-covered mountain tops of New Zealand and from the edge of a war zone in Central Africa to a sub-tropical paradise in the North Pacific. Along the way, they search for some of the weirdest, most remarkable and most troubled creatures on earth: a large, black, sleepy animal easily mistaken for an unusually listless mudbank, a parrot with a song like an unreleased collection of Pink Floyd studio outtakes, a rhino with square lips, a dragon with deadly saliva, an animal roughly the length of a Boeing 737 and the creature most likely to emerge from the cargo doors of a spaceship.
Last Chance to See is a unique insight into the disappearing world around us, and this is their hilarious, entertaining, informative and thought-provoking adventure.
Amazonian Manatee
Following in the footsteps of author Douglas Adams, Stephen Fry joins zoologist Mark Carwardine to find some of the most endangered animals on the planet, beginning with the Amazonian manatee. With just a few thousand remaining, the duo search for the creatures by following the pink dolphin - said to be the key to finding the `ghosts of the Amazon' - before the trip takes a dramatic turn
Northern White Rhino
Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine embark on a journey to track down the northern white rhino in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo, the area where the critically endangered creatures were last seen. With an estimated population of just four still living in the wild, the duo discover how the animal's first cousin, the southern white rhino, was itself once near to extinction but is now flourishing with a population of 17,000. Stephen also has an encounter with silverback gorillas and Mark babysits some chimpanzees
Aye Aye
Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine search for the aye-aye in Madagascar, a rare species of lemur considered to be an ill omen by many of the island's inhabitants. Mark discovers that much deforestation has taken place since his previous trip 20 years ago, which could hinder the duo's chances of spotting one of the elusive creatures. They also meet the world's smallest chameleon and the tiniest primate on the planet, Madame Berthe's mouse lemur
Komodo Dragon
Stephen Fry and Mark Carwardine search for komodo dragons in Indonesia and take part in a conservation scheme that involves tagging the creatures to produce a proper census. They also help release dozens of turtle hatchings into the wild, and learn about the problems faced in stopping the trade in marine creatures often used in Chinese medicine. Last in the series
Kakapo
Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine travel to New Zealand where they try to track down the kakapo parrot, which has seen its numbers dwindle since cats, dogs and rats were introduced into its natural habitat. They meet conservationist Don Merton, who drew up a recognised template for protecting endangered species, and learn about his plans to help the rare birds
Blue Whale
Stephen Fry and zoologist Mark Carwardine continue their journeys to the ends of the Earth, travelling by car, boat, plane and horse through Mexico.
In a dramatic conclusion to the series, the travellers have a close encounter with grey whales and meet the deadly Humboldt squid in a search for the mighty blue whale, the biggest creature that has ever lived.
