剧情梗概：
杜彩霞17岁时被地主恶霸抓去“冲喜”，性格刚烈的她无意烧死地主儿子后被逼殉葬，幸被未婚夫刘满堂所在的八路军团营救。因国民党特务顾思雨的出卖，八路军团全军覆没，彩霞也因此与刘满堂失散并收养了烈士的遗孤。从此，彩霞踏上了一条艰难的寻夫与革命之路，并又陆续收养了四名孤儿，成为五个孩子的“单身母亲”。解放后，参加了革命队伍的大贵负伤转业回来，彩霞感受到了大贵的感情，得知他的病情后毅然接受了他，但最终在命运的捉弄下没有在一起。上世纪60年代，彩霞在日本遗孤舅舅程南山寻亲的过程中与之相爱，孰料程南山在救治中国鼠疫病人过程中自己感染了病毒即将失明，最终放弃感情选择了离开，又给彩霞留下了刻骨铭心的遗憾。80年代，孩子们已长大成人，种种波折之后年暮的彩霞与归国的付更年在婚礼上回首往事，共同感慨人生的种种沧海桑田……
