剧情梗概：
方學文是一間舊式書店的老臣子，將屆退休之齡，不言退休的他原因是特別鍾愛看書，是名符其實的書迷。文、史、哲，甚至武俠小說都是學文所好，還喜歡不時向親友推介十本好書，希望每個人都能培養出讀書的興趣。他與妻子顏如玉都是在書店邂逅，志趣相投，繼而發展成夫妻，因此書店於他有著極深厚的情義結。大兒子方心明孝順生性，中五畢業後便決定打工賺錢，以幫輕父母的擔子。同時看見二弟方心正聰明伶俐，讀書成績好，願望是到美國繼續大學課程讀大學，剛巧在毛里裘斯設廠的細叔伯欲聘請香港人到當地當管工，不需要甚麼專門技術，但工資比香港時高出數千元，心明覺是一個賺錢的好機會，便決定漂洋過海工作去，知慳識儉地每月寄錢回家支持心正到美國升學。心正回港工作在毛里裘斯工作了十多年的心明，工廠面臨結業，同時眼見二弟心正讀書有成，已了無負擔，遂決定回香港。他深知與香港的生活總有點脫節，工廠大多已北移，因此打算轉型其它方面的工作，報讀普通話、考保安牌、的士牌等等…心明都用心去學去考，最後當上個保安員。至於心正方面，在美國完成大學課程之後，成為出色的網絡保安工程師。剛巧獵頭公司為香港一間大機構以高薪厚職招攬心正，心正對這份工作蠻感興趣，同時又可以回香港與家人團聚，可以說是一舉兩得，於是決定回香港發展。心明是初級物業保安，心正則是網絡高級保安工程師，同樣稱之為保安，但兩份職業可說是有很大分別。心正不但事業有成，還有一位乖巧賢淑的好女友雷婉儀。小女兒心美還是個中六學生，有著時下年青人的習性，整日沉迷上網，打機，與網友chat，因而引發起一連串的家庭小風波…家人互相關懷有一間舊書店的老闆年紀老大，子女又不願繼承衣砵，打算結業，適時學文見心明任職保安員，前景不表樂觀，為提升心明社會地位，毅然決定按樓，傾盡所有作頂手費，為心明舖路，他日接手書店做老闆。後來，心明得悉父親心意，既感動又慚愧，幾經掙扎，最終辭退保安員一職，替學文打理書店。自小少看書，多看漫畫的心明，如今接觸書本多了，竟看出點點興趣來，看在老父學文眼中，是最值得欣喜的事。心正因為工作的關係，與同事徐希敏投契非常，事業如日方中。此時，女友婉儀主動提出分手，更避走美國，心正唯有寄情工作，與希敏合作無間，情愫漸生。家人眼見心正失戀多時，感情終於有著落，亦感欣慰。後來，婉儀回歸，心正夾在舊愛新歡之間，左右做人難。但因感情事局外人難以插手，家人們只能默默支持心正，作出他以為最恰當的選擇。
