剧情梗概：
丽兹（索拉伯奇ThoraBirch饰）出生在美国的贫民窟里，从小就开始承受着家庭的千疮百孔，父母酗酒吸毒，母亲患上了精神分裂症。贫穷的丽兹需要出去乞讨，流浪在城市的角落，生活的苦难似乎无穷无尽。随着慢慢成长，丽兹知道，只有读书成才方能改变自身命运，走出泥潭般的现况。她从老师那里争取到一张试卷，漂亮的完成答卷，争取到了读书的机会。从现在起，丽兹在漫漫的求学路上开始了征程。她千方百计申请哈佛的全额奖学金，面试时候连一件像样的衣服也没有。然而，贫困并没有止住丽兹前进的决心，在她的人生里面，从不退缩的奋斗是永恒主题。她的爸妈都是毒虫，妈妈患了精神分裂症，双眼失明，后来死于AIDS。住过收容所，也睡过地铁站，从来没有一个象样的家的她，青少年的岁月多半是在慌乱的流浪中度过的。偶尔，她还要扮演大人的角色，回去照顾她的爸妈和姊姊，多少次，她流泪坐在妈妈的病床前面。她身边的人，多半是遭遇不幸的人。同侪暴力、性虐待和精神疾病。一日复一日，她活在一个没有希望和梦想的世界里。每天起床，我看见的世界上的每个人，都好像都披着一层膜，无法穿透。这种感觉很奇怪，有点悲哀，可是没有办法改变。奇怪的是，贫穷和负面的童年经验，并没有让她变坏或者失去希望，隐隐约约之中，她一直都知道，在她生长的环境之外，其它人所过的，是很不一样的生活。而她知道，只有想办法脱离现在的环境，才有可能到那个新世界去。母亲死后的几个月，在没有经济来源、没有精神鼓励的情况下，她自己一个人，申请进入一所私立高中，因为她相信，读公立高中并不能帮她跳出贫苦的轮回。开始念书之后，她还是没有地方睡，还要在肮脏的洗碗槽前面，一面工作赚微薄的薪水，一面念微积分、几何学。她身边的所有亲人、朋友全都告诉她，没有用的，不要痴心妄想进大学。可是当她拿到班上第一名，得到机会参观哈佛校园的那天，她就狠狠地发誓，要成为哈佛的一员。那天，当她看着走在哈佛校园里的男男女女，心里不禁问自己，这些人的动作举止，为什么这么不一样？是不是因为，他们来的世界就是这么不一样？若是这样，那我要更努力、更努力，把我自己推到那个世界去。为了念哈佛，她必须要申请奖学金，找遍了所有的奖学金信息，她发现纽约时报提供全额的奖学金，足够让她去念昂贵的哈佛。面试的那天，她连一件象样的衣服都没有，穿着一件破烂衣服，罩上一件向姊姊借来的大衣勉强充场面。果然，她得到了那笔奖金，进了哈佛。领奖致词的那天，她说，她的生命就在那一刻，将永远地被改变。LizMurray，一个最贫穷，也最勇敢的哈佛女孩。
