剧情梗概：
翻拍自TVB于1981年制作的同名电视剧。钱财多寡并非衡量贫富的必然准则;能同历患难的有情人，却未必能共享荣华!真正能为爱情付出一切-金钱、名誉，甚至性命，方能厮守一生!青梅竹马的朱锦春(马国明饰)与易蓉蓉(周丽淇饰)，生于动荡大时代，一生中经历离离合合，犹能在暮年重遇，最后能否体会爱情真谛?青梅竹马婚事多磨在20、30年代的虎头镇，贫穷农户朱锦春，与出身大户人家的易蓉蓉自小青梅竹马，认定对方为终生伴侣。然而易蓉蓉的爷爷易叔恭(李国麟饰)却把她许配了给镇长董举仁(鲁振顺饰)儿子董振邦(陆永饰)。一天朱锦春获一神秘相士赠言，谓他虽有帝王之相，惟爱人只可共患难，不能共富贵。为令朱锦春知难而退，易叔恭开出苛刻条件，要朱锦春拿出巨额礼金，才考虑二人婚事。朱锦春与同父异母弟弟朱祥勋(袁伟豪饰)、死党牛玉干(谢东闵饰)及吴多好(古明华饰)想尽办法筹礼金，不惜假扮北帝显灵骗取村民的香油钱，惟功亏一篑被揭穿，遭逐离虎头镇。易蓉蓉为救四人无奈答应下嫁董振邦，岂料董振邦竟逃婚。朱锦春本打算与易蓉蓉私奔，但易蓉蓉担心易叔恭面对舆论压力，遂提议朱锦春投军，待他日有成就，向董振邦取回休书，二人才正式成亲。声名雀起鸳鸯分离朱锦春偕三个兄弟一同闯上山贼大本营，却被贼婆龙川凤(杨诗敏饰)一网成擒。龙川凤钟情朱祥勋，扬言要娶他为押寨夫人。适时总司令车大炮(单立文饰)碰巧领军围剿山贼，朱锦春偶然间救了车大炮，获赞许铲除女贼有功，委任他为副司令。朱锦春衣锦回乡，易叔恭乐意让易蓉蓉嫁他。另一边厢，董振邦也加入了叛军笑口组，更提议朱锦春与易蓉蓉摆下订婚宴，趁机刺杀车大炮。吴多好妹妹吴多茹(黄智雯饰)钟情董振邦，暗助他行事，却被吴多好灌她饮下忘情水，混乱间反令刺杀计划败露。朱锦春与众人逃亡时，董举仁染上疟疾，朱锦春入城寻找药物，与忙于救母的水果小贩牛力(郑敬基饰)一见如故，惺惺相惜。朱锦春等人回程途中再遇车大炮，被关进监牢，再与易蓉蓉分散。影子皇帝错失良缘两年后，车大炮政权被推翻，朱锦春等四人逃到上海，投靠当上百乐门舞厅大班的董振邦。朱锦春赫然发现百乐门老板原来是牛力，而其未婚妻竟是易蓉蓉。朱锦春无法接受，遂向牛力提出生死决斗朱锦春误打误撞成了上海大亨，又因与日本人打交道，被骗到东北当上末代皇帝漙仪的替身。朱锦春自觉更上一层楼而飘飘然，易蓉蓉却生怕当中有阴谋，求朱锦春放下一切与她重回虎头镇过平淡生活，惜朱锦春被富贵冲昏头脑，舍不得眼前的荣华与权力。似是应验了相士之言，二人又再分离富贵浮云天意弄人朱锦春与易蓉蓉失散四十年，晚年由内地流落香港，终在社工冯小融(朱千雪饰)协助下，与年老的吴多好、朱祥勋及牛玉干重逢，更认定冯小融家中女佣忍姐正是他朝思暮想的易蓉蓉，然而忍姐却矢口否认身份莫非这对有情人真的无法打破宿命？
