剧情梗概：
昆虫学博士麦迪走马上任美国农业部专门研究昆虫部门的负责人，事业正面临蒸蒸日上之势。然而繁忙的工作却导致了她与男友丹的关系恶化，就在双方的感情陷入危机之时，麦迪又迎来了工作上的一大难题——变异的蝗虫正席卷全美。原来这种变异的蝗虫是麦迪管辖的C-12实验室的彼得博士通过杂交的方法培育出来的，他的初衷只是单纯地为了科研目的。但这种蝗虫的繁育能力非常强，并且现有的任何一种杀虫剂对这些蝗虫来说都是无济于事的。也就是说，这些蝗虫一旦泄漏一只都将给人类带来巨大的灾难。麦迪当即下令彼得中止研究并就地销毁所有蝗虫，彼得也因此被解雇。然而一名实验室的操作员却偷偷留下了几只蝗虫。不久，这几只蝗虫在被秘密送往毕尔空军基地后不甚泄漏，于是，之前麦迪所预想的灾难真的发生了。蝗虫以令人难以置信的速度迅速繁殖，它们所及之处，不但所有植物瞬间凋谢，地上交通、空中交通以及人们的正常生活都受到了极大的影响。麦迪意识到，蝗虫一旦没有了足够的植物，它们也许会逐步变成食肉动物，那么人类也将无可避免地登上它们的“菜谱”。万分紧急之下，彼得博士主动请缨帮助麦迪，以此来弥补自己当初的错误。身为联合国农业专家的男友丹也回到了麦迪身边，同她一起面对困境。国土安全部建议使用一种最新研制的生化武器——BX毒气对蝗虫进行空中喷射，尽管这种毒气只能杀死5%-10%的蝗虫，而且因为技术尚未成熟，因此对人体将产生一定程度的危害。可面对严峻的局势，总统还是无奈宣布采纳这一方案。一切准备就绪，麦迪和彼得博士偶然发现电流可以杀死蝗虫，于是他们极力建议尝试这种方法。方案一经提出便得到了赞同，全国上下都给予最大的协助，在两批数量庞大的蝗虫即将在美国中部汇合的时候，等待它们的是两张巨大的电网。蝗虫危机终于化险为夷，麦迪和丹也在这次出生入死的经历之后，重拾了昔日的感情。
